Democrats Recruit Protesters for GOP Town Halls

The House Democrats’ campaign wing is trolling for Medicare protesters at town halls this week in 20 Republican-held congressional districts, The Caucus Blog of The New York Times reports. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DSCC), which has launched a website called Don’t End Medicare, will provide picket signs and budget talking points to anyone who wants to attend.

DSCC robo-calls denouncing Medicare reform are going out to seniors in Florida, Arizona, and other states in an attempt to ratchet up the noise level at constituent meetings with pro-reform lawmakers.

Republicans say House Democrats are showing more interest in GOP meetings than in their own.

“Democrats are refusing to hold town halls because they are afraid to answer legitimate questions about their plan to empower unelected bureaucrats to cut Medicare and endanger seniors’ access to treatment,” said Paul Lindsay, a National Republican Congressional Committee spokesman.

Many DSCC-targeted town halls are in districts that voted for President Barack Obama in 2008 but favored Republican tea party candidates for Congress in 2010.

2011 May 17 - Headline News Empty Violent Jihadists: The Contemporary Left’s Freedom Riders?

Post by Admin Thu 19 May 2011, 8:21 am

SOURCE: NewsReal Blog

Last night I watched an incredibly moving documentary about the early civil rights movement in America in 1961. The film is based on Raymond Arsenault’s book about the many hundreds of young volunteers who faced savage beatings and possible death as they rode buses in an attempt to end Jim Crow racial segregation laws and practices. Directly by Stanley Nelson, the film shows us the extraordinary dignity and determination of the “freedom riders” whose courage inspired and guided even the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

These young people were mainly African-Americans, but they were also white, and both male and female. They dressed conservatively and were trained not to fight back-not even when they were being beaten by racist mobs wielding baseball bats, lead pipes, sharp instruments, deadly fists, and hearts filled with hate. Buses were surrounded by mobs of 200 men. One bus was blown up. Bus drivers refused to drive the buses. Southern governors and police officers refused to protect the “freedom riders” or to stop the would-be lynch mobs. Ku Klux Klan members in full regalia literally marched over their bleeding faces. Journalists and photographers were attacked. The “freedom riders” were arrested.

Finally, President John F. Kennedy and Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy had to send in federal marshals. They also requested that the Interstate Commerce Commission end the “white only” and “colored only” facilities for interstate travelers.

I felt absolutely connected to this struggle. I felt indebted to these valiant Americans. I am sure others of my generation felt likewise. As I watched the non-violent riders-their transcendent purity, dignity, courage-I realized that many leftists of my generation have now assumed that Arabs, Muslim jihadists, and “Palestinians” are somehow the same as these brave, young Americans.

They are not. Arabs are not using non-violent tactics to achieve their reactionary goals. They are violent in every way. Their goals are not to obtain rights for their people but rather to return them to the 7th century and to destroy both the Jewish and Christian presence in Muslim-majority countries.

I don’t know how to convey this insight to my generation of leftists. They do not read conservative websites. They view me as a “traitor” for having abandoned them by evolving to a deeper and greater understanding of reality. If you know any leftists, please ask them to read this piece.

2011 May 17 - Headline News Empty Report: Doctors Refusing to Treat Overweight Patients

Post by Admin Thu 19 May 2011, 8:19 am

From the South Florida Sun-Sentinel: Fifteen obstetrics-gynecology practices out of 105 polled by the Sun Sentinel said they have set weight limits for new patients. Some of the doctors said the main reason was their exam tables or other equipment can't handle people over a certain weight, but at least six said heavy women run a higher risk of complications.

"People don't realize the risk we're taking by taking care of these patients," the newspaper quoted Dr. Albert Triana of South Miami as saying. "There's more risk of something going wrong and more risk of getting sued. Everything is more complicated with an obese patient in GYN surgeries and in [pregnancies]," he told the newspaper.

It is not illegal for doctors to refuse overweight patients, but it has medical ethicists worried. So far, the weight cutoffs have been enacted only by South Florida ob-gyns, who have long complained about high numbers of lawsuits after difficult births and high rates for medical-malpractice insurance.

2011 May 17 - Headline News Empty Another Senate seat becomes likely GOP pickup

Post by Admin Thu 19 May 2011, 8:18 am

Last Friday, Wisconsin Democrat Herb Kohl (of the Kohl's Department Store fortune) announced he is retiring from the Senate, and will not run for re-election in 2012. Richard Baehr notes that he has had health problems, but was likely to have been re-elected, had he run. Russ Feingold, who was defeated by Ron Johnson in 2010, by a 5% margin, was speculated about as a candidate for Kohl's seat in 2012, a presidential election year that could spark higher turnout among Democrats. But his former chief of staff issued a statement last week saying that "Running for office in 2012 is not something Russ is eager to do or has been planning to do."

Today comes news that Tommy Thompson, former popular four-term Republican governor, has told friends that he plans to run for the Senate in 2012. There had been speculation that Paul Ryan would run for the Senate, but Ryan has announced he will stay in the House and keep his accumulated seniority.

Thompson has to be reckoned a powerful candidate in Wisconsin, and we can expect this race to generate a lot of national attention.

2011 May 17 - Headline News Empty Nearly 20 percent of new Obamacare waivers are gourmet restaurants, nightclubs, fancy hotels in Nancy Pelosi’s district

Post by Admin Thu 19 May 2011, 8:17 am

Of the 204 new Obamacare waivers President Barack Obama’s administration approved in April, 38 are for fancy eateries, hip nightclubs and decadent hotels in House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi’s Northern California district.

That’s in addition to the 27 new waivers for health care or drug companies and the 31 new union waivers Obama’s Department of Health and Human Services approved.

Pelosi’s district secured almost 20 percent of the latest issuance of waivers nationwide, and the companies that won them didn’t have much in common with companies throughout the rest of the country that have received Obamacare waivers.

Other common waiver recipients were labor union chapters, large corporations, financial firms and local governments. But Pelosi’s district’s waivers are the first major examples of luxurious, gourmet restaurants and hotels getting a year-long pass from Obamacare.

2011 May 17 - Headline News Empty Dear Republicans: This is a club, learn to use it

Post by Admin Thu 19 May 2011, 8:16 am

Because if you don’t hammer Obama every day from now until Election Day with the fact that his stimulus plan caused a net loss of 500,000 jobs, you don’t deserve to win:

Our benchmark results suggest that the ARRA created/saved approximately 450 thousand state and local government jobs and destroyed/forestalled roughly one million private sector jobs. State and local government jobs were saved because ARRA funds were largely used to offset state revenue shortfalls and Medicaid increases rather than boost private sector employment. The majority of destroyed/forestalled jobs were in growth industries including health, education, professional and business services.

(Emphasis added)

That’s from a study (PDF) by economists at Ohio State. In other words, we borrowed and spent nearly one trillion dollars (that’s $1,000,000,000,000) on the assurance of President Obama and the (Social) Democrats that doing so would stimulate the economy, create new jobs, and restore prosperity. Instead, we bought a bunch of pork-barrel projects and waste that only made unemployment worse. We’d have been better off if Obama and Congress had done nothing.

That monument to incompetence alone should cost them the 2012 election.

You’ve been handed a club, Republicans: use it.

2011 May 17 - Headline News Empty California Assembly passes 'card check' for agricultural workers

Post by Admin Thu 19 May 2011, 8:13 am

The United Farm Workers Union is just a Jerry Brown autograph away from salvation. The UFW which has seen its membership decline from more than 70,000 in the seventies to roughly 27,000 (including part time and seasonal workers) today is ready to fill its ranks and coffers through ‘card check.’

The Sacramento Bee reports that the California Assembly passed the ‘card check’ bill on Monday.

The measure, Senate Bill 104, cleared the Assembly by a vote of 51-26 with Republicans opposed. It now goes to Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown, who has not yet announced whether he will sign it.

Proposed by Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg, D-Sacramento, the bill would let farmworkers bargain collectively if a majority of employees submit petition cards to the Agricultural Labor Relations Board.

2011 May 17 - Headline News Empty Lee Fang and Center For American Progress Use Foreign Money to Influence American Elections

Post by Admin Thu 19 May 2011, 8:12 am

Remember in 2010, Barack Obama, the Center for American Progress (”CAP”), and little Lee Fang over at CAP, were “CAPping” in their shorts over the United States Chamber of Commerce and “foreign money.” The irony here is that Lee Fang and CAP are largely funded by a convicted criminal named George Soros whose conviction for insider traded was upheld way back in 2006 in France. But that’s another story.

It was the big talking point when the left ran out of all their other talking points. Never mind that the Chamber of Commerce could definitively show that no foreign dollars were going to influence American elections. Little Lee Fang sank his fangs into the story, ignored the facts, and fluffed up controversy where there wasn’t any on the Center for American Progress’s web site. Lefties seized on every salacious distortion and omitted fact.

Turns out that it was not the United States Chamber of Commerce using foreign money to influence American elections. It was and is the Center for American Progress using foreign money to influence elections. Little Lee Fang is kind of sort of paid with foreign dollars.

2011 May 17 - Headline News Empty The IMF Honcho And The African Maid-Why Is America Paying IMF's Bills?

Post by Admin Thu 19 May 2011, 8:11 am

Saturday was a bad day for the New World Order.

New York police boarded the first-class cabin of an Air France jet bound for Paris to collar Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the head of the International Monetary Fund, a Grand Master of the Universe and the Socialist Party's hope to defeat President Nicolas Sarkozy in 2012.

Strauss-Kahn, or DSK as he is known, was hauled back to New York and identified in a police lineup by an African maid at the Sofitel hotel as the man who emerged stark naked from the bathroom of his $3,000-a-night suite and tried to rape her.

DSK's political allies are howling entrapment. Yet his rap sheet is long. Called the Great Seducer, he was charged with the sexual harassment of a co-worker at the IMF and accused by a young French novelist of behaving like a "rutting chimpanzee" and trying to rape her when she contacted him about a book she was writing in 2002.

The novelist, Tristane Banon, now 31, is a goddaughter to DSK's second wife. She took a lawyer's advice not to file charges then. But, says the Guardian, Banon is about to file them now.

Monday, The New York Times wrote, "As the impact of Mr. Strauss-Kahn's predicament hit home, others, including some in the news media, began to reveal accounts, long suppressed or anonymous, of what they called Mr. Strauss-Kahn's previously predatory behavior toward women and his aggressive sexual pursuit of them, from students and journalists to subordinates." [In France, Skepticism and Anger Over Official's Arrest, May 17, 2011]

What is this satyr doing running the IMF? How was a man of his Eurotrash reputation approved by the United States government? Such conduct may be pooh-poohed over the pond, but has our country dropped that low?

2011 May 17 - Headline News Empty White Teachers Sue Philadelphia School, Charge Race Bias

Post by Admin Thu 19 May 2011, 8:10 am

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Four white Philadelphia teachers charge in federal race-bias lawsuits that a black principal suggested they were unfit to teach black students.

The teachers work at a predominantly black school in the city’s East Falls neighborhood.

Their lawsuits say a former principal had them read an article that said “white teachers do not have the ability to teach African American students.”

2011 May 17 - Headline News Empty 2011 May 17 - Headline News

Post by Admin Thu 19 May 2011, 8:09 am

This DAY in History

May 17, 1954:
Brown v. Board of Ed is decided

In a major civil rights victory, the U.S. Supreme Court hands down an unanimous decision in Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, ruling that racial segregation in public educational facilities is unconstitutional. The historic decision, which brought an end to federal tolerance of racial segregation, specifically dealt with Linda Brown, a young African American girl who had been denied admission to her local elementary school in Topeka, Kansas, because of the color of her skin.

In 1896, the Supreme Court ruled in Plessy v. Ferguson that "separate but equal" accommodations in railroad cars conformed to the 14th Amendment's guarantee of equal protection. That ruling was used to justify segregating all public facilities, including elementary schools. However, in the case of Linda Brown, the white school she attempted to attend was far superior to her black alternative and miles closer to her home. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) took up Linda's cause, and in 1954 Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka reached the Supreme Court. African American lawyer (and future Supreme Court justice) Thurgood Marshall led Brown's legal team, and on May 17, 1954, the high court handed down its decision.

In an opinion written by Chief Justice Earl Warren, the nation's highest court ruled that not only was the "separate but equal" doctrine unconstitutional in Linda's case, it was unconstitutional in all cases because educational segregation stamped an inherent badge of inferiority on African American students. A year later, after hearing arguments on the implementation of their ruling, the Supreme Court published guidelines requiring public school systems to integrate "with all deliberate speed."

The Brown v. Board of Education decision served to greatly motivate the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s and ultimately led to the abolishment of racial segregation in all public facilities and accommodations.
